West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has confirmed that emergency services are currently dealing with significant flooding in Birmingham, with firefighters, police officers and council personnel deployed to shut off multiple major routes in the city.
In a statement issued at 11:20pm on Wednesday evening (August 26), WMFS said: "We currently have six crews dealing with a significant flooding affecting Curbar Road, Thornbridge Avenue and Haddon Road, Birmingham."
Roads closed and cars stranded
Crews are being supported by West Midlands Police and Birmingham City Council. The statement added: "Please avoid the area, where possible."
Pictures on social media show cars becoming stranded in floodwater. One post reported flooding on Queslett Road, approximately three miles from the area where emergency services have been dispatched.
Council advises residents to call Floodline
Birmingham council issued a statement a few hours earlier, confirming it was aware of the flooding in parts of the city. A spokesperson said: "West Midlands Fire Service are currently receiving numerous calls for flooding. The fire service advise is for people to vacate the property and to contact Floodline."
"Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. Call Floodline: 0345 988 1188."
Numerous clips of the floods are now circulating on social media, showing how thunderstorms have led to flash flooding in the Midlands city.
