BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent told viewers that firefighters are battling a wildfire near Llangynidr Reservoir in Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, which has been declared a 'major incident'.
Speaking on the show, Nugent said: "Emergency crews said high winds are making the situation near Ebbw Vale difficult to deal with." The fire has been burning since Saturday, August 8, with crews working through the weekend.
Fire Service Update and Community Impact
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service posted on Facebook on Monday, August 10: "This morning the moorland fire near the Llangynidr Reservoir is still ongoing and crews have been at the scene all weekend and have been containing the spread of the blaze."
The post continued: "The wind direction this morning has changed and communities towards Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Pontypool and Newport are affected by the smoke this morning. Smoke can also be seen and smelt further afield, including Tredegar and the surrounding communities."
Ongoing Efforts and Road Closures
The service added that a specialist firefighting helicopter will return today to support crews, contractors, and farmers on the ground, reaching hard-to-access areas. They expect to remain at the scene for several days, reviewing their response daily as conditions change.
Road closures are in place: "Llangynidr Road and other local roads maybe closed, please follow the diversions in place to support the emergency services with the space they need to fight the fire."
Additional Wildfire in Hampshire
During the report, Nugent also mentioned a wildfire in the New Forest, Hampshire, which is believed to have started from a vehicle blaze that spread to nearby heathland. She noted that "more than 20 crews" have been deployed to tackle that fire.
