A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Colombia this afternoon (Monday). The epicenter was located just five kilometers east of San Jose del Palmar, but the quake was felt in various cities, including Medellin, where numerous buildings were evacuated, as reported on social media.
Details of the Quake
The tremor struck at a depth of 107 kilometres, the USGS said, and a map from the US institute suggests it was felt as far as Bogota. Maps from the US Geological Survey show very strong shaking in surrounding areas, including Cali, Armenia, and Manizales.
Impact on Cities
Several buildings in Medellin, the capital of Colombia's Antioquia province, have been evacuated. Footage circulating on X depicts crowds gathered around a high-rise building in the city, seemingly in response to the evacuation.
A video posted to X shows a cathedral in Manizales partially collapsed following the earthquake, with one of the spires crumbling. The Express said that it was not able to immediately verify the footage.
