A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck southern Philippines on Wednesday afternoon local time. The quake hit 32km southwest of Sarangani at a depth of 10km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Impact and Risks
Despite the strong shake, there is no tsunami threat to the nation. However, the USGS indicated a low likelihood of casualties, but due to some residents living in vulnerable properties, there could be high levels of damage.
The earthquake's location also impacted Indonesia, as well as the Philippines.
Recent Seismic Activity
This earthquake comes just two months after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao island, displacing over 10,000 families. That quake resulted in at least 35 deaths and over 100 injuries.
Following the earlier quake, tsunami alerts were triggered in the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia, but were later cancelled or downgraded hours after it hit.
