5-minute morning task stops window condensation for good

Opening windows wide for five to ten minutes each morning can clear humid air and prevent window condensation, according to experts. The simple task takes minimal time and costs nothing, unlike dehumidifiers.

The recent drop in temperature has led to condensation appearing on windows in the morning, especially in bedrooms. Bedrooms become particularly vulnerable to dampness during winter as occupants release moisture into the air with each breath.

Why condensation forms

The air around us holds moisture, with levels fluctuating depending on external weather conditions and indoor activities, such as cooking or having a shower. Warm air can retain more moisture than cold air. As air temperature drops, it eventually reaches a threshold where it can no longer hold any extra moisture and becomes fully saturated at 100%. This temperature is known as the "dew point".

Once air cools down to its dew point, water droplets start to form on surfaces that are colder still. This is noticeable as morning dew on grass or condensation on a car windscreen after a cold night.

The five-minute solution

Condensation forming on the inside of glass panes is the result of poor ventilation, according to Which? Trusted Trader Finesse Windows. They said, "It means there's too much moisture in the room and not enough ventilation. Moisture needs somewhere to escape. The more you let fresh air circulate, the less water ends up on your windows."

To tackle window condensation quickly, the experts recommended clearing humid air from the room by throwing windows wide open for five to ten minutes each morning. While there may be concern about heat escaping, allowing dry air in for just a few minutes can leave rooms feeling fresher and help prevent long-term damp issues.

Additional tips

Keeping internal doors open wherever possible will also help filter out humid air, while allowing drier air to flow freely throughout the home. Window trickle vents ought to be kept open at all times. The experts explained, "Modern A-rated windows come with trickle vents for a reason."

They allow a small, controlled flow of fresh air, helping moisture escape without making the room cold. The experts advised, "Keep them open all year round, especially in bedrooms overnight."
