£1.30 Kitchen Spray Keeps Spiders Out During Mating Season
£1.30 Kitchen Spray Deters Spiders in Mating Season

Spider mating season is approaching in the UK, and from the end of August, spiders become more active as they search for mates. They are drawn indoors by the cooler temperatures, seeking warm, dry places to breed. The season peaks in mid-October, so the worst is yet to come.

Simple Measures to Keep Spiders Out

Households are advised to keep windows closed from 7pm over the coming weeks, as this is when spiders are most likely to enter. Alan Reid, a window specialist at Art Windows and Doors, warned: "Male house spiders and false widows are on the move, and homes with open windows are at risk of infestation. Now is the time to seal gaps and shut windows before spider season peaks."

Beyond shutting windows, a common kitchen staple can help. Plymouth mum Danielle shared her trick on TikTok, applying Astonish Kitchen Cleaner Spray into window gaps and along sills. She captioned the clip: "When spider season is upon us and you've already had a huge unwanted eight-legged visitor in the house. Astonish saving the day!"

The Natural Deterrent

The spray, available for £1.30 at supermarkets or via Ocado, has a "zesty lemon scent" and cuts through "grease and kitchen grime with ease." Danielle explained in comments: "When I use it I don't see any spiders! I use it every couple of days on all of my windows and doors."

Pest UK confirms that spiders dislike strong fragrances like lemon, lime, orange, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil. Vinegar also works but leaves an unpleasant odour. Alternatively, mix half a lemon with water in a spray bottle and apply around entry points.

Other Tips from Viewers

Viewers shared their own methods: one uses lavender and peppermint oil on cotton pads in window corners, another places conkers in room corners, and a third burns lavender candles. To further prevent spiders, declutter, store food properly, hoover regularly, and remove cobwebs.
