Florida Expat Shocked by UK Heatwave: 'I Made a Noise I Never Made Before'

A man who relocated from Florida to the UK has admitted that the current heatwave caught him off guard, describing a moment of shock when he touched his car steering wheel. Brett, who co-hosts the YouTube channel How Great is Britain with his wife Gemma, shared his experience in a TikTok video that has garnered attention.

From Florida to Britain: A Heatwave Surprise

Brett explained that despite coming from a state known for year-round warmth, the intensity of the UK heatwave was unlike anything he had experienced. “A few months ago, my wife and I moved from Florida to England, and you would think that this type of heat that we're experiencing – again – in England, would be somewhat second nature or normal to us,” he said. “But it is absolutely not.”

He recounted a specific incident: “What I'm realising is, part of moving internationally is having new experiences. One of my new experiences was just getting into the car, sitting down on the seat, touching the steering wheel, and making a noise that I have never, ever made before in my life. I can't even recreate it.”

‘Completely Involuntary’ Reaction

Describing the noise as “completely involuntary,” Brett said, “It just came out of me. I didn't know that I could make a sound like that. But that's what this heat does. It is crazy intense.” He concluded by saying he was “about to melt” and urged others to “stay cool out there. It is a scorcher.”

Heatwave Peak and Forecast

The Met Office issued a red heat warning running until midnight on Thursday, with overnight temperatures not dropping below 20°C in many areas. According to the Met Office, “Thursday will see the peak of the heat for many, though those further east will retain extreme heat on Friday and Saturday and could continue to see further impacts, which has resulted in Amber warnings.” The far southeast will retain warmth the longest, with a climb-down expected by Saturday, when peaks around 32°C are likely.

Next week is forecast to bring a change to more average temperatures, with westerly winds and rain, particularly in the North West.

Thunderstorms and Rain on Friday

Friday will see torrential downpours and thunderstorms in parts of the UK. Wales is expected to bear the brunt, with heavy showers hitting Cardiff from 2am before moving north into England until around 6am. Scotland will see rain across its centre, with Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen affected by 6.30am. England's West Country will experience showers overnight, pushing north to Liverpool and Northumberland by 6.30am. Belfast may see downpours around 7am. By 9.30am, most of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland should dry out, though a belt of showers will linger over Scotland. The Met Office has forecast “rather cloudy across northern regions with outbreaks of rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by hail and gusty winds.”
