Travel expert Pollyann, known on Instagram as travelwithpalma, has advised passengers to avoid wearing sandals when flying. In a recent update, she highlighted safety and hygiene concerns, urging travellers to opt for closed-toe shoes instead.
Pollyann stated: "Skip the sandals when you fly - seriously. Change into those sneakers! If there's an emergency involving fire, broken glass or the need to evacuate fast, you'll want real closed-toe shoes to protect your feet and help you move quickly!" She also noted that airplane bathrooms can be unsanitary, with liquids on the floor that are likely not water.
While airlines do not ban sandals, experts generally recommend closed-toe footwear for safety. In an emergency evacuation, sandals offer less protection against debris and sharp objects. Additionally, open-toed shoes expose feet to germs and bacteria in public areas like airports and planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advises passengers to dress sensibly to reduce injury risk. Their guidance includes wearing clothes that cover as much skin as possible, made of natural fabrics like cotton or wool, and low-heeled leather or canvas shoes.
Beyond safety, sandals may be less comfortable for navigating airports or during long flights. Passengers may also need to remove them at security, forcing barefoot walking on potentially dirty floors.
