Laguna Salada de Torrevieja, a pink-hued salt lake located just an hour's drive from the popular British holiday destination Benidorm, has gone viral on TikTok, drawing attention for its unique colour and reported health benefits. A video by user @carielizabethh, which has amassed over 6.5 million views, showcases the lake's bubblegum pink water and explains that visitors can float effortlessly due to its high salt concentration.
Why the Lake is Pink
The lake's striking strawberry hue results from the activity of microorganisms, specifically salt bacteria and micro-algae, which thrive in highly saline conditions and produce natural pigments. According to Travel Republic, the holiday provider that shared details about the spot, these organisms are responsible for the water's stunning pink appearance.
Therapeutic Benefits and Visitor Tips
Legend holds that covering oneself in mud from the lake before swimming offers numerous therapeutic benefits, including helping to prevent skin and lung conditions, deeply exfoliating and nourishing the skin, and reducing inflammation and easing pain. It is reportedly beneficial for those suffering from eczema. However, visitors with sensitive skin are advised to take care, as the high salt content can cause irritation or a mild stinging sensation. The TikTok video cautions that visitors should be "super respectful" and not swim outside designated areas protected by wooden planks.
Flamingo Habitat
The lake's elevated salt levels also create an ideal habitat for brine shrimp, making it a prime feeding ground for flamingos. These shrimp are responsible for giving flamingos their iconic pink plumage. Visitors can spot flamingos while at the lake, adding to its appeal.
