Bamburgh in Northumberland has been voted the best seaside town in the UK for the fourth consecutive year, according to a Which? survey of more than 4,700 travellers.
The village, with a population of just 400, received an overall satisfaction score of 86 per cent, earning five-star ratings for its beach, seafront, scenery, tourist attractions and peace and quiet. Its only weakness was shopping, which received one star due to limited outlets.
Portmeirion in Wales came second with 83 per cent, praised for its scenery, seafront and Mediterranean-inspired architecture. St Andrews in Scotland was the top Scottish destination with 82 per cent, noted for its historic attractions and long beachfront.
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said the survey highlights that lesser-known coastal spots can offer as much as famous resorts. The full list includes towns across the UK, with many hidden gems scoring highly.
