British holidaymakers heading to Turkey this summer face a significant rule change regarding eSIM usage. According to travel experts, anyone planning to use an international eSIM in Turkey must activate it before boarding their flight, as activation will no longer be possible after arrival.
New Regulation Targets eSIM Activation
Turkey remains a top destination for UK travellers, with millions visiting in 2025 alone. However, a new regulation has been introduced that blocks access to websites and applications of certain eSIM providers within Turkey. The Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD) reported on July 10, 2025, that the action primarily targets Turkish citizens purchasing eSIMs for overseas travel, but it also affects foreign tourists.
Travel expert Juan David Soler from Holafly explained: "eSIMs have become the go-to option for Brits wanting affordable mobile data abroad without the hassle of physical SIMs or costly roaming. But now, travellers will no longer be able to activate a new eSIM once they arrive in Turkey. To avoid getting caught out, UK travellers should ensure their eSIM is fully downloaded and activated before leaving the UK."
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failure to activate the eSIM before departure could leave travellers without internet access from the moment they land. This is particularly problematic for those relying on phones for maps, transport, or bookings. Holafly advises that travellers should set up their digital SIM while still on UK networks, confirm it is working properly, and keep the QR code for activation upon arrival in Turkey.
The specialists also recommend downloading a secure VPN before travelling to ensure continued access to blocked services. With industry experts predicting a bumper summer for international travel, it is crucial for holidaymakers to prepare in advance to avoid disruption.
