A Summer Transformation
While Chamonix is renowned for its winter sports, the summer months reveal a different side. The town is filled with cobbled streets, pretty flowers, and a fast-flowing river through the centre, lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. Strolling and stopping for treats, all under the gaze of Mont Blanc, is a delightful way to spend a day.
The Historic Montenvers Train
A key attraction is the glacier itself, reachable not by mule as in the 18th century, but by the Montenvers Train. Built in 1919, this striking red train is a rack and pinion railway, one of only five in France. It takes passengers from the heart of Chamonix to the top of Montenvers, a 20-minute journey to over 6,000 feet above sea level, offering views of Les Drus, Les Grandes Jorasses, and Les Grand Charmoz.
At the top, visitors can enjoy a hot chocolate, stroll the viewing platforms, and take in the scenery before returning to town for a well-deserved wine by the river.
