Stop mashing avocado and do 1 thing instead for easy snack

Forget mashing your avocado every time you want a quick bite. There's a much tastier way to turn it into a satisfying snack: avocado fries. This recipe from Serious Eats turns ripe avocados into crispy, golden bites with a buttery inside, ready in less than 30 minutes.

What You'll Need

The recipe serves two or three people and takes 15 minutes to prepare and 25 minutes to cook. You'll need one cup of panko breadcrumbs, one and a half tablespoons of Tajín (or any chilli and lime seasoning, optional), half a teaspoon of table salt, half a teaspoon of garlic powder, 60ml of extra-virgin olive oil, one large egg, and 480g of Hass avocados.

How to Make Avocado Fries

Start by placing the panko breadcrumbs into a medium-sized bowl and gently crushing them with your hands until they have a slightly finer, sandy texture. Stir in the Tajín, salt, and garlic powder, then drizzle with olive oil and mix thoroughly until the breadcrumbs are evenly coated.

Next, halve the avocados and carefully remove the stones. Place the avocado halves cut-side down on a clean work surface, then gently peel away and discard the skins. Slice each avocado lengthwise into eight even pieces, keeping the slices as intact as possible. Lightly beat the egg in a separate bowl, dip each avocado slice in the beaten egg, let the excess drip off, then coat evenly in the seasoned panko. Repeat with the remaining slices.

Cooking and Serving

Set your air fryer to 175°C (or the oven at 220°C for 18 minutes). Arrange the coated avocado slices in the basket, making sure they have enough space around them to cook evenly. Air fry for about eight minutes, turning the slices halfway through, until the coating is crisp and golden brown. Serve with chipotle mayonnaise, ranch dressing, hot sauce, or your favourite dipping sauce on the side.

Alternatively, if you don't want avocado fries or mashed avocado, try the vegetable-stuffed version. An expert chef at Good Food shared that adding spicy beans and feta will elevate the green fruit. They said: "This super speedy meal is packed with vegetarian sources of protein—top creamy avocados with spicy kidney beans and crumbled cheese." This recipe takes only 11 minutes to prepare and serves up to two people.
