While Scotland is famous for its rugged landscapes and lochs, its beautiful beaches are often overlooked. Many people picture crystal blue water, golden sands, and seclusion when imagining a perfect beach, but few realize such places exist in Scotland without needing to fly abroad.
The Silver Sands of Morar are an award-winning collection of hidden gem white sand beaches along the coastline from Arisaig to Morar. Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, just an hour's drive from Fort William, these beaches feel like an untouched paradise.
Wild Camping at Morar Beach
Visitors can wild camp for free on Morar beach, as I did recently. After a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Glasgow, I arrived in the early afternoon. Despite a handful of other campers, the beach remained peaceful and quiet, even in blazing sunshine. I found a secluded spot on the dunes to set up a mini campsite.
The beach has a small car park costing £10 to park overnight, though spaces are limited. Free gender-separated toilets and a baby changing area are available. The only rules are to camp responsibly when lighting fires or BBQs, respect the environment, and leave nothing behind. Everyone took this code seriously, and the beach was spotless with turquoise water.
Nearby Beaches and Film Fame
The Silver Sands include Morar, Arisaig, Tougal, Bourblach, Traigh, Camusdarach, and more. Camusdarach beach famously appeared in the 1983 Scottish film Local Hero, including scenes of a helicopter landing. From here, there are panoramic views of the Inner Hebrides, including the Isles of Skye, Rúm, and Eigg.
Note that wild camping is not permitted on Camusdarach or other nearby beaches—only Morar allows it. However, the beaches are close together; at low tide you can walk between them, or drive just a few minutes. Traigh beach, though smaller, is mesmerizing with washed-up shells and water reminiscent of Barbados, but it is less secluded due to its location on the main road and across from a golf course.
Recommendation
For a memorable getaway, I highly recommend visiting the Silver Sands of Morar on a sunny day and wild camping to make a weekend of it.
