Pittenweem, a working fishing village in Fife, has been named the cutest harbour town in Britain by The Telegraph, beating more famous rivals like St Andrews and Portree.
The article ranked Britain's 10 loveliest harbour towns, and Pittenweem topped the list for 'cuteness'. The Telegraph praised its "pastel-painted cottages and boat-bobbed harbour", noting that the lobster pots are still in use, making it an authentic fishing community.
What to do in Pittenweem
Visitors can stroll along the harbour to watch small boats bring in fresh catches. Fish and chip shops nearby serve locally caught haddock, cod, lobster, crab, and langoustines. Chip Ahoy at the Larachmhor is often recommended and regularly reaches the finals of the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.
A walk to Pittenweem Lighthouse offers views of the harbour and cottages. The town also has a unique tidal pool that fills with seawater twice a day, designed to be sheltered for calm swimming.
Historic caves and art scene
St Fillan's Cave, a natural cavern said to have been home to a saint in the 7th century, is open for tours. Keys can be obtained from the Pittenweem Chocolate Company. After returning the key, visitors can enjoy hot chocolate at the Cocoa Tree Café or buy artisan chocolates as souvenirs.
The town's cobblestone streets are lined with independent shops and galleries showcasing local artists. Pittenweem also hosts an annual art festival attracting international artists.
Tobermory also makes the list
Tobermory on the Isle of Mull was ranked ninth, named best for colour due to its vividly painted waterfront houses. Known to some from the CBeebies series Balamory, it remains an active fishing harbour and has a traditional distillery with a visitors' centre.
