A couple's honeymoon at Sandals Grenada tested both the resort's more affordable luxury suite and its most expensive penthouse, concluding that while the latter is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, the former offers excellent value.
Testing Two Tiers of Luxury
Jessica Lindsay and her husband, newlyweds, split their stay between two rooms: the Lover's Lagoon Hideaway Walkout Junior Suite, starting from £2,469 per couple for a week (£353 per night), and the Italian Oceanview Penthouse One Bedroom SkyPool Butler Suite, at £8,575 per couple per week (£1,125 a night).
The cheaper suite includes a massive freestanding bath, double walk-in shower, king bed, and a daily restocked fridge with wine, beer, and soft drinks. Its patio overlooks a tropical lagoon with tortoises, lizards, iguanas, and a friendly cat, and features a giant circular tub for al fresco soaks.
The Penthouse Experience
The penthouse, spanning over 1,000 sq ft, includes a living room, kitchen, bedroom, double bathroom, and dressing area with multiple walk-in wardrobes. Its balcony offers panoramic ocean views, a private infinity pool, a bath, and a telescope for stargazing.
Butler service, provided by a team including Alex, Don, and Raul, anticipated needs such as afternoon snacks, fresh cocktails, reserving prime sunbeds, and making dinner reservations. The suite also offers 24-hour in-room dining.
Island Adventures and Resort Amenities
The couple took a full-day guided tour ($120 each) with Island Routes Caribbean Adventures, visiting the St George Nutmeg Museum, Jouvay chocolate factory, Rivers rum distillery, Belmont Estate, and Grand Etang National Park, where they saw mona monkeys and swam at Annandale Falls.
Back at the resort, they enjoyed the 'party pool' with a DJ, trivia, and 'fish-a-rum' games, plus a more relaxed pool, beach with watersports, a free daily glass-bottom boat trip, and activities like darts, snooker, and bocce ball. Evening entertainment included themed shows at the Living Room and pub nights at Tipsy Turtle.
Dining and Verdict
Dining highlights included filet mignon at Butch's Chophouse, Japanese teppanyaki at Kimonos, and Jamaican patties by the pool. A private sunset dinner on the beach cost $199, though mosquitoes were a nuisance.
While the penthouse felt justified for a honeymoon, the couple plans to return for their fifth anniversary and would likely book the Lover's Lagoon suite again, as it offers a similar experience at less than a third of the cost.
