A Ryanair passenger claims she was charged £75 at Manchester Airport for an 'oversized' bag she has used on the same route more than 30 times over seven years. The traveller, named Laura, took to social media to express her frustration after the unexpected fee.
Passenger's complaint
Laura, flying from Manchester Airport, posted on X: "Hey @Ryanair I want a refund for the £75 that the absolute jobsworth at Manchester Airport this afternoon took from me for an 'oversized' bag i've used and never had an issue with on this exact journey maybe 30+ times over the last seven years." She included a photo showing the bag fitting into the 40 x 30 x 20 cm slot.
In a follow-up, she said she asked a staff member if measurements had changed, but was told enforcement was now more stringent.
Mixed reactions
Some users sympathised, sharing similar experiences. One said they had paid a fee despite the bag fitting, while another advised asking for a measurement. However, others sided with Ryanair, arguing the bag appeared oversized. One user wrote: "The depth of your suitcase goes over the line that clearly says too big."
Laura responded that Ryanair was the only airline on that route, so she had no alternative.
Ryanair's response
A Ryanair representative said: "This passenger booked a Regular Fare for this flight from Manchester to Göteborg Landvetter (Aug 4), which allowed them to carry a small personal bag and 10kg cabin bag measuring up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm onboard."
"As this passenger's cabin bag exceeded the permitted size, she was correctly required to pay a standard gate baggage fee by the gate agent at Manchester Airport."
