Residents in Poland were awakened in the early hours of Thursday, July 30, after air raid sirens were activated following reports that a Russian missile may have entered Polish airspace in Lublin, eastern Poland.
Credible threat information
Marcin Bubicz, a spokesperson for the governor of Lublin province, told WP Wiadomości that authorities had received “credible and confirmed” information from Poland's Government Security Centre regarding a threat of air strikes. While official confirmation of a missile breach is pending, the alarm was sounded based on these reports.
Social media captures sirens
Videos shared on social media captured the night sky with the sound of the siren audible in the background. A British holidaymaker posted a video on X, with the caption partially reading: “3.50am. Sirens going off. As a British tourist this scared the hell out of me.” The sirens eventually ceased and no further alerts were reported.
Ukraine also targeted
Air raid warnings were sounded across Ukraine just a few hours earlier. Reuters news agency reported hearing explosions in Kyiv.
NATO member responds
Poland, a NATO member, defensively deployed fighter jets to safeguard its airspace in response to Russian air strikes, according to its armed forces' statement on X. “Fighter aircraft and an early warning aircraft have begun operations, while ground-based air defence systems and radar reconnaissance systems have reached a state of readiness,” they announced. They stated that these measures are precautionary in nature.
