Sam Wilder, a YouTuber known for budget food challenges, spent 24 hours at the Cabot Court Hotel in Weston-super-Mare and declared he was "impressed" with the experience, though he had two complaints.
Rules of the challenge
At the start of his video, Sam explained the rules: "For the next 24 hours, I'm not allowed to leave this Wetherspoons. The rules are simple. Once I step foot inside, I cannot leave until the full 24 hours are up. I must eat, drink, sleep, and breathe Wetherspoons for the entire day. And if I don't manage it, I fail."
The Cabot Court Hotel is a Grade II listed building on the town's seafront, near The Grand Pier, Weston Museum, and the Water Adventure Play Park. Sam began his challenge at 9.09am, ordering a bowl of fruit and yoghurt and a coffee, noting the chain shines "in the fruit department". He praised the "beautiful" beer garden with sea views, calling it "quiet, borderline peaceful".
Food and room
For lunch, Sam had a Korean fried chicken wrap and a pale ale in the sunny beer garden. He described the chicken as "juicy" and the lettuce as "nice", though the wrap was "a little bit stale". Later, he showed viewers his £99 room, which had a "decent size" and "huge bed", plus a "classic" Wetherspoons carpet, two chairs, a TV, a fan, floral wallpaper, and a picture of the Grand Pier. He also liked the balcony and "swanky" bathroom.
In the evening, Sam watched the World Cup and ordered fish and chips with a Pepsi Max. He noted the fish had a "jagged effect" suggesting it was cooked in oil that was too hot, but the fish was "nicely cooked" and the batter had "decent flavour". However, he found the mushy peas "bland".
Night and verdict
Sam went to bed at half-time of the England vs Argentina match, playing Mario Kart until sleep. In the morning, after a bad night's sleep, he left without breakfast. He said: "Seriously, like, what an absolutely fun day. I'm done, and I just want to get home, which is why I'm not stopping for breakfast. It's one of the nicest Spoons I've been to."
He added: "The only thing it could do with is air con. And the bed - as big as it was - wasn't very comfy, which is why I didn't really sleep very well, but overall, I'm impressed. Also, the staff were fab."
