Liverpool have received a formal approach from Valencia for midfielder Harvey Elliott, with the La Liga side looking to secure his services before the summer transfer window closes. According to Matteo Moretto, Valencia are in advanced talks over a loan deal for the 23-year-old England youth international, who has struggled for regular game time in recent years.
Elliott requests Anfield exit
Elliott has spoken directly with Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola and requested to leave Anfield in order to join Valencia, with all parties said to be optimistic about a deal. The midfielder spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, but his playing time was restricted due to a clause in the agreement that would have converted into a permanent transfer.
Unai Emery's side opted against signing Elliott on a £35m permanent basis, and he returned to Liverpool earlier this summer. Villa's manager acknowledged that the lack of regular football was taking its toll on Elliott last season, with the midfielder making just nine appearances across all competitions — one short of the ten required to trigger the clause.
Three offers on the table
Fabrizio Romano reports that Elliott currently has three offers on the table, with Valencia working hard to beat their rivals to his signature. Romano also claims that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Carlos Corberan's side ahead of a move to Spain.
Elliott has made 149 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Fulham in 2019 and was a pivotal figure during Jurgen Klopp's final campaign in charge. He featured 53 times across all competitions in the 2023-24 season, up from 46 the previous year, but has since slipped down the pecking order under Arne Slot and his spell at Anfield appears to be drawing to a close.
Iraola explains omission
Elliott was left out of Iraola's matchday squad for the 2-2 draw with Newcastle, with the Reds manager explaining he favoured alternative choices. Speaking ahead of that clash, Iraola said: "With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it's a matter of finding the balance on the bench."
"In Harvey's case, he's trying, he's improving every week, but I still prefer other options. Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad. But it's another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality."
Liverpool are also looking to bolster their squad before the deadline on September 1, with a reported agreement to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG.
