The Lake District has been named the fourth best region in the UK for an autumn road trip, according to a new study based on search data. The national park was praised for its stunning scenery and popularity among motorists looking to take in the seasonal colours.
Study ranks top UK road trip destinations
The ranking was compiled by holiday provider Away Resorts, which looked at in-demand locations and used average organic search volume for each destination combined with the term "road trip". The Scottish Highlands topped the list, followed by North Wales in second place and Cornwall in third.
Northumberland came fifth, with the Peak District in sixth place. The rest of the top ten included South Wales, the Cotswolds, Snowdonia and Devon.
Scenic routes and autumn highlights
The Lake District offers a range of driving experiences, from easy routes linking scenic villages to more challenging mountain passes such as Kirkstone and Wrynose Pass, which are better suited to experienced drivers. Among the best places to visit in autumn are Grizedale Forest, known for its displays of autumn leaves, and Ambleside, one of the park's prettiest towns.
Aira Force, a 65-foot waterfall set in ancient woodland, is another spot noted for vibrant autumn colours. The study highlights that staycations have grown in popularity in recent years, with many holidaymakers choosing to travel by car.
