Jet2 warns of enhanced security at Gran Canaria airport

Jet2 has issued an alert for holidaymakers travelling to or currently in Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands, warning of potential disruptions due to Pope Leo XIV's visit. The alert, released on Wednesday, advises passengers to allow extra time for travel to the airport and to reach their departure gate.

Enhanced security measures

The airline stated: 'Due to Pope Leo XIV's visit to the Canaries, you may experience sudden road closures in Gran Canaria and enhanced security measures at Canaria Airport. Please allow sufficient time to get to the airport and to your departure gate.'

Jet2 confirmed that check-in closes 40 minutes before scheduled departure, and all flights are expected to operate as normal. Any delays will be communicated via SMS, email, the Jet2 app, and the airline's website.

Context of the papal visit

Pope Leo XIV's visit to the Canary Islands comes as the region has faced a significant increase in irregular migration over the past decade. Local Catholic leaders hope the visit will draw attention to the treatment of migrants, according to reports.
