Jet2 has issued an update to reassure customers that its free 10kg hand luggage allowance will remain unchanged ahead of new European transparency rules due in 2027. The budget airline confirmed the allowance stays as standard, even as Europe introduces regulations to make airline fares and baggage rules more transparent and comparable when booking.
Jet2’s Current Allowance
Jet2 already provides a free 10kg cabin bag plus a personal item with every booking. The airline and holiday company said this gives customers confidence at the point of booking, as they know exactly what’s included from the outset, with no hidden fees or surprise charges later on.
Around 80% of Jet2 passengers cite the free 10kg allowance as one of the main reasons they choose to fly with the airline, according to Jet2.
CEO’s Response
Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy said the new rules won’t require any changes on the company’s part, since fair treatment of customers around hand luggage has always been central to how it operates. He said holidaymakers shouldn’t have to pay extra or work through complicated rules just to bring their essentials, and that Jet2 has always aimed for simplicity, transparency, and fairness so customers know exactly what they’re paying for.
Heapy added that Jet2 welcomes any regulatory change that helps customers better understand what’s included in their fare and make more informed comparisons between airlines, calling it further evidence of why the company continues to attract record numbers of customers.
What the New EU Rules Cover
In July, MEPs in the European Parliament voted to approve a wider package of air passenger rights that extends beyond baggage transparency. Key changes include:
- Faster refunds: Passengers who opt for reimbursement instead of rerouting will receive it automatically. Those affected by travel disruption will get clear instructions on how to submit a compensation claim within four days of their journey ending.
- Extended claim windows: Travelers will have nine months to file a compensation claim, while airlines will have 30 days to either pay out or provide a documented explanation — such as extraordinary circumstances — along with details of how to escalate a complaint further.
- Guaranteed free personal item: Every passenger will be entitled to bring one personal item, such as a small bag or backpack, on board free of charge.
- Upfront pricing: Airlines, travel agents, and booking platforms will be required to display ticket prices inclusive of carry-on baggage from the very start of the booking process, rather than adding it as an extra later. Airlines will still be able to offer cheaper fares to travelers who choose to fly without hand luggage.
Impact on UK Travelers
Although these are EU regulations, they will still affect UK passengers when flying from European airports or with EU-regulated airlines. The full rules are expected to take effect by mid-2027, following a 12-month transition period.
