A local man has highlighted a 'beautiful' beach in North Wales that he believes 'often gets ignored'. Ruben Chorlton-Owen, 25, who has lived in Abersoch his whole life, says the small sandy cove of Porth Bach near Abersoch, Gwynedd, is a hidden gem that many visitors don't know about.
A Hidden Gem Near a Popular Destination
Abersoch is one of North Wales' most popular seaside destinations, attracting thousands of visitors every summer, many from places like Liverpool, Manchester and Chester. Despite this, Ruben thinks one of its best beaches goes completely unnoticed by many people.
Porth Bach is only around a 25-minute walk from the centre of Abersoch, or about 10 minutes by car. Despite being so close to the village, it feels like a completely different world. It's much quieter than the main beaches, even during peak summer bank holidays, making it the perfect place to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Scenery and Wildlife
The beach sits right beside the Wales Coast Path across the headland, making it a great stop. The scenery is stunning, the water is often beautifully clear, and it's also a lovely place for a swim. Ruben also notes that the spot is ideal for dolphin watching, as they are often seen in the area, although there's never any guarantee. Seals can also sometimes be spotted here.
Under the Radar
Ruben notes that the location remains largely unknown to many visitors. However, everyone he knows who has made the trip has come away thoroughly impressed. Open throughout the year and welcoming to dogs, the spot appeals to a wide range of visitors. Ruben believes this hidden gem is long overdue greater recognition.
"I genuinely think because it's tucked away, many people visiting Abersoch don't even realise it's there," he added. "I've lived in Abersoch my whole life and Porth Bach is still the beach I recommend most when people ask me where they should visit. It's peaceful, beautiful and feels like one of those places that's somehow stayed under the radar despite being so close to one of Wales' most popular seaside villages."
Things to Know
Nestled near the coastal village of Abersoch on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, Porth Bach is a compact and tucked-away beach. Regarded as a 'quiet cove', it can largely only be reached by water (by boat, paddle board or kayak) or by taking care to walk from the adjacent shoreline at low tide. Visitors are strongly encouraged to check local tide timetables in advance to prevent being cut off. With no commercial facilities or shops on site, the beach retains its entirely unspoilt character.
