David Hartley, a 28-year-old father from Gateshead, died in his sleep while on holiday in Antalya, Turkey, on June 25, leaving behind a three-year-old daughter and a heartbroken family. The sudden death, attributed to sleep apnoea and a heart condition, occurred just days after his arrival.
Family Faces Repatriation Costs
Because David had no travel insurance, his family must cover the substantial cost of repatriating his body to the United Kingdom. A GoFundMe page, set up by his cousin Megan, has raised over £9,000 as of July 2, with nearly £8,000 donated within the first day alone.
Megan wrote on the fundraiser: 'It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our beloved cousin, David Hartley, sadly passed away while on holiday in Turkey. He was only 28 years old and leaves behind his beautiful three-year-old daughter, along with a heartbroken family and so many friends who loved him dearly.'
Family History of Loss
Megan added that the family has suffered multiple tragedies in three years, losing David's grandmother, mother, and now David himself. 'Our hearts are completely broken,' she said.
The family has been overwhelmed by public support. Megan expressed gratitude: 'We truly cannot believe the kindness, generosity, and support that has been shown. This incredible support is making such a huge difference.'
