FCDO Spain Warning After Almeria Wildfire

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent warning for people travelling to Spain following a wildfire in Almería. The blaze broke out in Los Gallardos, Almería, in the Andalucía region of southern Spain.

What the FCDO advises

The FCDO stated: "If you are in an area affected by the wildfire: follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services at all times; avoid travelling into or through the affected area; follow updates from the emergency services; for emergencies, call 112."

Wildfires are common in Spain, including on the islands, during summer months and can pose serious danger. The FCDO also provided a helpline for those concerned about someone in the area: +34 677 904 624, run by the Psychological Intervention Group for Emergencies and Disasters (GIPED), with English-speaking staff available.

Spain is one of Britain's favourite holiday destinations, with millions visiting each summer. The FCDO often shares tips to help travellers make informed decisions.

Legal consequences and safety tips

The FCDO warned: "Causing a wildfire is a criminal offence in Spain, even if unintentional. Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished, do not light barbecues and do not leave empty bottles behind. You can be heavily fined for not following the rules against lighting outdoor barbecues in forest areas."

For information on what to do in the event of a wildfire, visit Civil Protection (website in Spanish). Immediately report any fire to emergency services on 112. The situation can change quickly, so stay up to date with official advice.

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance covering your itinerary, planned activities and emergency expenses.
