Escape to the Country: Welsh couple in tears over Devon home

In a recent episode of BBC's Escape to the Country, presenter Sonali Shah guided Welsh couple Lisa and Neil through a selection of homes in Devon, where they were left speechless by a property that brought them to tears.

The couple, working with a budget of £650,000, were looking to leave Wales for a rural retreat. Their requirements included a detached property with a garden suitable for dogs they planned to rescue, a generous dining area, and a utility room.

A Turret That Took Their Breath Away

While the first property in Burrington impressed them, it was a second home in Holcombe Rogus that captured their attention before they even entered. Lisa remarked: "I just don't know what to say, we've got a turret! It is quite striking, isn't it?"

Inside, the couple headed straight to the kitchen, which delighted Lisa. However, she told Sonali: "Please tell me it has a utility room, because I am not going any further and falling in love unless it has my utility room."

Emotional Moment Over the Utility Room

When Sonali confirmed the property had the utility room they wanted, Lisa became visibly overwhelmed. Stepping inside, she said: "It's not very often I'm speechless, as you know, but I am totally-" Her voice broke as she welled up, while Sonali raised her hands to her face to hold back her emotions.

Sonali remarked: "She's going to set me off, stop it! What's making you well up?" Lisa admitted she wasn't certain, while Neil explained the property possessed an unmistakable 'soul'.

Perfect Fit Within Budget

Upon discovering the house was listed at exactly their budget, the couple expressed little shock, praising the home as 'absolutely beautiful'. Neil revealed he could not identify any drawbacks with the property.

Lisa added: "The utility room is just something I've always wanted and it's perfect. I don't cry very easily, but it was quite difficult not to. It's a beautiful property, and it really captured my heart."

As the programme concluded, Sonali informed audiences that Lisa and Neil had returned for a second viewing, with the home remaining a strong contender for their relocation. Escape to the Country is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
