EasyJet has announced a new direct route from Newcastle International Airport to Larnaca, Cyprus, with the first flight scheduled for March 31, 2027. The airline will operate the service once a week, giving travellers in the North East a new option for a Mediterranean break.
Larnaca: a historic and popular destination
Larnaca is a historic port city on Cyprus's southern coast, described by EasyJet as offering "the perfect Mediterranean getaway". It is the third largest city in Cyprus, with a population of around 155,000, and was built on the ruins of Kition, an Ancient Greek city-state.
The city is rich in history, with churches, a castle, and museums adding to its cultural appeal. At the same time, its beaches and seafront promenade attract the most visitors today. Larnaca is also home to a seaport and a marina, giving visitors flexible options for their trip.
What Larnaca offers visitors
Larnaca has a hot climate, with low annual rainfall and high temperatures in the summer. The city's economy is growing, and it plays a key role in the island's importing and exporting of goods. The service sector accounts for three quarters of the city's workforce, reflecting its appeal to tourists.
Visitors can enjoy the Metropolis Mall, one of the largest shopping centres on the island, as well as a theatre, an art gallery, and a local wind orchestra. Several local football teams are based in the city for sports fans. A bus transport system connects different parts of the city, so driving is not necessary.
Food and booking details
The seafront offers numerous seafood restaurants and other eateries, with both continental and international options available. Local dishes include fasolaki (French beans cooked in red wine with lamb), louvi me lahana (black-eyed peas with chard), potato salad, black olives, sausage, baked or grilled lamb, and aubergine dishes.
