An unexpected Midlands city has been named one of the best places to visit in the UK for 2026 by Time Out, as the city undergoes a remarkable transformation. Derby, in the East Midlands, secured seventh place on the list of 14 UK destinations, surprising many who may overlook its potential.
Time Out revealed its definitive 'must-visit' list at the start of the year, featuring towns and cities worthy of a place on your travel radar. Some destinations earned their spot through exciting new attractions, others for their 'quiet brilliance', and some for ground-breaking cultural events and culinary offerings. Derby claimed seventh place out of every destination across the UK.
Look beyond the shuttered shops blighting the city centre and the fading bars that once buzzed with nightlife, and it becomes apparent that Derby is steadily emerging as a reinvigorated cultural destination. While Derby has long been a popular base for those venturing into the rugged terrain of the Peak District and exploring its charming villages, the city itself is only now beginning to earn genuine recognition amongst travellers, thanks to fresh initiatives and developments aimed at transforming its appeal.
Entertainment
The city has welcomed several new additions that can only serve to bolster its nightlife and entertainment offering further, catering to a broad range of tastes. A brand new 3,500-capacity warehouse club called ULTRA burst onto the scene for ravers in the Midlands on New Year's Eve 2025. The venue has already played host to a string of events, drawing music lovers to the industrial park to revel in massive sounds within a cutting-edge production space. Some may say the dance floor is dying, but this hotspot has undoubtedly breathed new life into the clubbing scene for the city's younger generation.
At Elvaston Castle, families can look forward to a packed calendar of events throughout the year, building on those that have already taken place. From outdoor cinema evenings and live music performances to food and drink festivals and much more, the stunning 320-acre estate provides an ideal setting in which to enjoy a dose of culture. Even without any scheduled events, it remains a wonderful spot to stroll through and explore the sprawling grounds on the outskirts of the city.
Another welcome addition, nestled in the very heart of the city, is Valliant Live — a vibrant destination for concerts and live performances, with a capacity of 3,500. Having opened its doors in April 2025, the venue has already attracted a wealth of celebrated comedians, bands and artists, who have added it to their demanding touring schedules as they pass through the area. With bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants all within easy reach, concert-goers can pour out of the venue and straight into the city centre to make the most of its buzzing nightlife.
What truly helps establish Derby's prominence is its extensive shopping centre, Derbion, brimming with designer labels and high street favourites alongside a cinema, bowling alley, food court and dining venues — meaning you can spend a wet Midlands day entirely indoors with little incentive to venture outside.
Restaurants
Elevating the culinary and events landscape for both residents and tourists alike is Derby-based independent hospitality operator Bustler, which has ambitious proposals to transform a city centre car park into an exciting new food and beverage destination. The St James Yard project is expected to feature approximately 20 shipping containers across two levels showcasing diverse food and drinks vendors, alongside other retailers celebrating independent enterprises throughout the East Midlands.
Meanwhile, the past year has witnessed numerous new dining establishments emerge across the city, delivering fresh flavours and culinary experiences to some stunning historic buildings. Among them is La Burrata, which launched in August 2025 within the Old Fire Station at Darley Abbey Mills, offering a genuine Italian menu. Bringing further vibrancy to the city centre is another delightful eatery, ideal for pre-gig dining or post-shopping sustenance. Situated in the River Lights development behind the bus station is The Engine Room, serving all-day menus spanning breakfasts through to pizzas, grilled fare and beyond.
As an increasing number of enterprises expand throughout the city and homegrown businesses discover fresh approaches to innovation, it is evident that Derby is emerging as a destination offering greater appeal for city breaks or day excursions for those across the UK.
