The Caminito del Rey, an 8km (5-mile) aerial walkway in El Chorro, Malaga, Spain, was once considered the world's most dangerous hike. The path has since been restored and is now much safer, offering thrill-seekers a breathtaking experience suspended 100 metres above a dramatic gorge.
A restored trail with a dramatic past
The walkway was built in the early 20th century between the Gaitanejo and El Chorro waterfalls to aid transport of materials to a local hydroelectric power station. Over time, the bridges and pathways deteriorated, earning it the dangerous reputation. After restoration, it now boasts "unforgettable" views and a "unique experience" of walking over footbridges built into the gorge, according to the official Spanish tourism website.

A hiker named Conor Carter shared a video on TikTok, describing it as "one of the most breathtaking walks" he has ever done. He said: "This was once known as 'the world's most dangerous hike'. Welcome to El Caminito del Rey, Málaga, Spain. It's one of the most breathtaking walks I've ever done! Suspended 100 metres above a dramatic gorge, this iconic trail takes you along narrow boardwalks carved into the cliffside before crossing an incredible suspension bridge."
The route winds through gorges, canyons, and a vast valley, including the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Nature Reserve, with walls reaching depths of 700 metres. It is home to various wildlife, including Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, golden eagles, wild boar, and mountain goats.
Practical information
The walk is linear and follows a one-way downhill path from north to south, taking on average three to four hours to complete. A shuttle bus service returns visitors to the car park. Tickets must be purchased beforehand, either online or at the northern entrance. General admission costs €10, guided visits in Spanish or English cost €18, shuttle bus is €2.50, and parking is €2. Children under eight are not allowed, and those over eight may need to show ID.
