Katie Timms, a self-confessed cruise addict, recently experienced the world's largest water park at sea aboard Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas, the current largest cruise ship in the world. While she embraced many thrills, one slide proved too daunting.
Category 6: A Water Park Like No Other
Category 6, the largest water park at sea, features six record-breaking slides. Timms bravely tried Crown's Edge but couldn't muster the courage for the Frightening Bolt, a drop waterslide that is the tallest at sea. She noted that Royal Caribbean warns, "once your stomach lurches, it's too late," but for her, the fear hit just upon seeing the slide.
Her partner, however, took on the challenge. He described stepping into the purple capsule and feeling the floor give way beneath him, with a 'jetpack' strapped to his back propelling him down the vertical drop. He emerged looking like he'd had the ride of his life, though he didn't return for another go.
Competitive Fun and More Slides
At the top of the tower, Timms also encountered the Storm Chasers, a mat-racing slide where she competed against others. Despite initial hesitation, she went for it and lost every race, but called it "so much fun."
Unfortunately, two slides—Pressure Drop and Storm Surge—were closed during her visit. Pressure Drop is an open freefall waterslide, while Storm Surge features a massive 'wall' that adds adrenaline. Timms did enjoy the Hurricane Hunter slide multiple times, recommending it for nervous riders as a confidence builder with its twists, turns, and colorful lighting.
FlowRider and Final Thoughts
At the back of Category 6, the FlowRider Surf Simulator offered a 12-metre-long surfing experience. Timms watched as many people quickly fell off, but staff were quick to assist and provide instructions, while some professionals made it look easy.
Timms concluded that Category 6 is an awesome way to spend a sea day on Legend of the Seas. Sailings start from £1,416 per person based on two adults sharing an interior stateroom on a 7-night Western Mediterranean Cruise.
