Jeff and Debb Knapp have not spent a night on land for 900 consecutive days, living full-time on cruise ships at a cost of up to £7,500 a month. The couple, who met, fell in love, and married aboard cruise ships, insist their seafaring lifestyle is more affordable than owning a property.
Life at Sea
Residing in a compact 28 square metre (310 sq ft) suite, the pair say they have "not been bored a single day" since getting together. They transfer between various Celebrity Cruises ships on consecutive itineraries, living as full-time passengers in the Sky Suite, which they say essentially extends to encompass the entire ship.
Jeff, 54, and Debb, 55, are fully booked until April 2028. "When you cross off a mortgage, rent, utilities, car payments, auto insurance, property taxes, vehicle repairs, and grocery bills, the math works out heavily in our favour," Jeff told Creator Zine. "Right now, we are fully booked all the way until April 2028, and our plan is to keep doing this forever."
How It Started
The couple's unconventional lifestyle began with a fortuitous encounter aboard the Celebrity Ascent in February 2024. Jeff, from New Jersey, and Debb, from Washington State, were both travelling solo when they began chatting at the ship's Oceanview Cafe. They connected over their shared love of cruising, with Jeff having 34 upcoming cruises booked and Debb having 56.
Many voyages on their schedules overlapped, and the duo spent five straight weeks cruising together. Jeff proposed aboard the Celebrity Beyond in April 2025 after designing an engagement ring himself. They married in Miami in June 2025 and held a second wedding celebration aboard the Celebrity Beyond in November.
No Boredom or Major Disagreements
Despite their confined quarters, the couple maintains they never get bored. "People constantly ask if we ever get bored but honestly, there is not even enough time in the day to do everything available to us," Jeff said. "We have not been bored a single day since we met."
Minor disagreements are rare and easily resolved. "Our minor disagreements usually come down to someone's tone of voice when they are tired or hungry," Jeff explained. "A few hours of rest or a good meal quickly fixes everything."
Financial and Practical Considerations
The couple economise by living on cruise ships, particularly on groceries, as they follow a strict carnivore diet. "Those food savings are huge for us because we follow a strict carnivore diet. Buying high-quality meat on land gets extremely expensive, but on the ship, we get to enjoy top-tier meats cooked to perfection every single day," Jeff said.
While aboard, their finances are managed electronically, and mail is scanned and forwarded. They use onboard medical facilities for routine needs and schedule consultations during port stops. Travel visas and entry requirements are tracked around their constantly changing itineraries.
Family and Background
Both from non-affluent backgrounds, Jeff and Debb became teenage parents and describe their early adult lives as marked by poverty and hard work. Today, they have six grown children and five grandchildren between them. They stay connected through video chats and regular visits, with family members joining them aboard cruises.
Debb first boarded a cruise ship in 1995 and dreamed of retiring at sea. She spent 29 years working in Washington State government while flipping properties. Jeff, a former craftsman and builder, initially had little interest in cruising but became hooked after trying it.
Looking Ahead
The couple has built an online following through their The Ship Show content brand, sharing the realities, costs, and tips of living aboard cruise ships. With cruises booked until 2028, they have no intention of disembarking. "On land, life gets bogged down by home maintenance, property taxes, utility bills, lawn care, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning," Jeff said. "At sea, all of those everyday burdens simply disappear."
