A British woman has died after a tornado struck a campsite in the Algarve, Portugal, during Storm Claudia. The 85-year-old was staying at the HolaCamp site near Albufeira when the extreme weather hit, leaving 28 others injured.
The woman, who has not yet been named, was initially reported missing before her body was discovered in the rubble. Portuguese authorities described the event as an 'extreme wind phenomenon', with the country's weather agency stating there was a 'high probability' it was a tornado.
Among the injured were British, Portuguese and Spanish nationals aged between six and 86. The tornado also struck the Hotel Eden, where 19 people were injured, one seriously. Two others sustained serious injuries at the campsite.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his solidarity with the victim's family. Albufeira mayor Rui Cristina said the scene at the campsite was 'truly devastating' and offered condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
