A 66-year-old British woman has died following a parasailing accident in Benidorm, Spain, after the parachute line broke, causing her to crash into rocks. The incident occurred yesterday at approximately 6.50pm local time near the Rincon de Loix area of the popular Costa Blanca resort.
Accident details
The woman, whose name has not been released, was parasailing with a man believed to be her husband when a strong gust of wind caused the line tethering the parachute canopy to the towing boat to break. The couple were carried towards the rocks, and the woman hit the rocks, suffering cardiac arrest. She was taken to Villajoyosa Hospital but could not be revived. The man survived but is thought to have suffered injuries including broken ribs and was described as 'walking wounded.'
Weather conditions
The accident happened during a sudden change in weather conditions, which led to a red flag being raised for swimmers in the area. An orange alert had been issued for the entire Alicante province, with warnings of severe storms, large hail, and dangerous wind gusts. Witnesses described the sky turning from blue to black as the weather changed rapidly.
One witness told local press: 'It was clear they were going to crash.'
Investigation
A police investigation has been launched. Yellow flag conditions were in place when the boat went out with the couple, and the probe is expected to focus on whether the accident was related to the anticipated weather change.
Water sports companies in Benidorm typically offer parasailing outings for around £70 per person, with discounts for two people. One firm advertises: 'Fly over the bay of Benidorm from more than 150 metres above the sea with a unique view of Benidorm's beaches and skyline.' Another says: 'Enjoy stunning views flying at over 150 metres high. You will take a boat ride with a drink included, with music and lots of entertainment.'
