AIRE Ancient Baths London Review: Worth It?

AIRE Ancient Baths in London is a viral sensation, known for its ethereal candlelit pools and hefty price tag. But is it worth the hype? Our travel expert put it to the test.

The Experience

Located in an 18th-century building behind the Strand, the spa once housed JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan. It opened in 2022 and cost £11.5 million to build. A 90-minute 'Nightfall' session starts at £115 per person.

Upon arrival, guests are guided to the baths, where staff assure that 'everything will be explained as you go along, and you won’t have to remember anything'. The spa is designed like a Greco-Roman bathhouse, with arched chambers, exposed brick, and flickering lamplight. Phones are banned, and a gong marks the hour.

The Baths

Guests have 90 minutes to enjoy various pools: a Tepidarium at 36 degrees, hot pools at 46 degrees, cold pools at 14-16 degrees, a jet pool, a salt pool, and a steam room. The salt pool (Flotarium) is a favorite, where you can float effortlessly. The steam room offers a sensory retreat, with a cold plunge pool nearby.

Treatments include the Hydrating Honey ritual, a 45-minute massage with jojoba oil and a honey hair mask. After the treatment, water shoes and swimwear are returned warm from a heater.

The Verdict

While the experience is wondrous, the communal changing area is small and crowded by the end of the session. However, it is well-stocked with amenities, including hairdryers, straighteners, and a swimsuit spinner.

After two hours, the reviewer emerged with glowing skin and soft hair, noting that her shoulders had finally relaxed. The baths are bookable online or by phone, ideally a week in advance. Disabled access is available with a lift and pool hoist. Baths entry starts from £115pp, with experiences from £140pp.
