Met Office names Storm Austen as 70mph gales and heavy rain hit UK
Storm Austen to bring 70mph gales and heavy rain to UK

Storm Austen, the first storm of the 2026 to 2027 season, is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK later this week, prompting the Met Office to activate its severe weather warning system.

A 12-hour yellow weather warning for wind will come into effect at 12am on Friday, October 23, affecting parts of London, south west England, Wales and the West Midlands. The warning warns of "damaging gusts and transport disruption" as strong west to northwesterly winds spread across southern parts of England and Wales.

Wind Gusts and Warning Details

The Met Office warning states: "Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible and some coastal or exposed areas could see 70 mph or more, but at this time there is uncertainty in where the strongest winds will be." The warning also notes periods of heavy rain that will make travel more difficult, with winds likely to ease late morning into the early afternoon.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree said: "While the exact track and position of Storm Austen is still being determined, what's clear is that we have an impactful period of weather on the way and the potential for disruption in places, which has resulted in the system being named."

Rainfall and Storm Movement

Storm Austen will move from west to east through Friday, with winds generally diminishing later in the day. Rain is an additional hazard, with 20-30mm expected in many places and higher totals possible over higher ground in the west and further north on Friday.

Crabtree added: "Peak gusts in excess of 70mph are possible on the most exposed coastal areas, while 50-60mph are likely more widely within the warning area. Weather warnings are under constant review and could be updated as confidence increases, so it's important to stay up-to-date with the forecast in the coming days."

Preceding Weather and Outlook

Before the storm arrives, Tuesday and Wednesday will see spells of rain and showers for many, but focus shifts to the southwest of the UK late Thursday as Storm Austen begins its approach. The Met Office warned: "An area of low pressure forming in the Atlantic will rapidly deepen as it is invigorated by the jet stream."
