Liverpool is set to be hit by gusts of up to 50mph this afternoon as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo bring unsettled weather across the UK. A yellow wind warning is in place for the city from 10am today, Friday October 23, until 9pm tomorrow evening, Saturday October 24.
Storm Austen brings strong winds to Liverpool
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind covering Liverpool, with the strongest gusts expected between 3pm and 4pm today, reaching up to 50mph. The warning states that while winds in the area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45 to 55mph during Friday daytime.
The warning adds: "In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption." The Met Office originally placed warnings in south eastern areas and Wales, but extended the alert to Merseyside.
Storm Boelo to bring weekend disruption
Storm Boelo, a separate low pressure system, is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England over the weekend. Chris Bulmer, Met Office deputy chief forecaster, said: "Storm Boelo will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England over the weekend, impacting the opposite end of the country to Storm Austen."
He added: "Gusts of 70-80mph in exposed coastal areas and high ground are possible, with 50-60mph gusts more widely. The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain, making for an impactful weekend of weather."
Advice for residents and travel
The Met Office advises people to stay indoors as much as possible and to avoid walking or sheltering close to buildings and trees. Residents are also urged to secure loose items outside their homes, including bins, plant pots, garden furniture, trampolines and sheds.
BBC Weather's outlook for Saturday to Sunday says: "Saturday will be wet and windy as a band of heavy, blustery rain pushes in from the west. Sunday will continue to be very windy with sunny spells, variable cloud and isolated, blustery showers. Monday will then see another band of rain and strengthening winds move in from the south."
