UK rain alert: Wall of rain to drench country on September 6

A barrage of rain could batter the UK within days in a welcome respite from the widespread droughts. Forecasts suggest there will be a relatively dry start to September with patchy showers before a wall of rain completely covers the country from head to toe on September 6, according to WXCharts.

Rain spreads across the UK

The front begins to sweep in from the Atlantic on September 5. By 6pm, much of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland could be covered in rain, although parts of East Anglia and some coastal areas of Scotland may escape it at that point. By midnight, the rain has been forecast to spread across almost the whole of the UK, with only Cornwall and Northern Ireland largely missing out.

The wet weather could persist through much of the day. By midday on September 6, the rain is expected to become more scattered across parts of southern England, while much of northern England and Scotland remains under the wet weather. By 6pm, the rain is forecast to retreat northwards, with Scotland and northern England exposed to the wettest conditions.

Met Office outlook

The long-range outlook from the Met Office between August 28 and September 6, which differs from WXCharts, suggests changeable conditions. The forecaster expects a relatively unsettled spell from August 28, with showers and longer spells of rain possible across many parts of the UK, along with some strong winds.

It said: "Some heavy bursts and thunderstorms are likely at times. It will likely remain changeable into early September, with rainfall amounts probably above average for the time year and the potential for some more strong winds at times. However, some drier, more settled interludes could develop at times. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although some short-lived warm or hot spells are possible, especially in the south."

The next few days could also bring unsettled conditions, with thunderstorms, heavy rain and muggy weather expected in some areas. The Met Office forecasts widespread dry weather on Monday, followed by cloudier conditions and the odd shower on Tuesday. By Wednesday, however, heavy showers and thunderstorms could develop, with some areas potentially seeing significant rainfall.
