Parts of the UK could see temperatures reach 30C on Tuesday, according to the Met Office, after a weekend of blustery showers in the north west. The wet weather followed three intense periods of heat earlier this year.
Southern England return to heat
Speaking about the potential of hot weather returning on Tuesday, the Met Office said: "This more unsettled spell is not expected to last long for much of southern UK with dry weather and sunny periods likely to return on Monday and continue into midweek. Further north, it will be cloudier with further showers or longer outbreaks of rain."
Temperatures are expected to recover quickly in the south. Many parts of England and Wales are likely to return to the mid to high twenties Celsius early next week, with the potential for temperatures to reach 30°C again in southern and eastern England by Tuesday.
"Conditions in the southeast could become very warm or locally hot, with the possibility that some locations may once again reach heatwave criteria, potentially making this the fourth heatwave episode of the year for parts of the UK," the Met Office added.
North west outlook
Although the forecast suggests warmer weather in the south, parts of the north west could see a high of 25C amid some more wet conditions. In its outlook for the north west on Tuesday, the forecaster said: "Overcast for much of the day on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, the heaviest of which will be across the north of the region. Temperatures near average."
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, it added: "The unsettled theme conditions into the rest of the week. There will be some warm sunshine at times. However, showers are also likely, especially in the north. Temperatures near average."
