Met Office Issues Yellow Snow Warning as Flood Risk Persists Across England
Yellow Snow Warning Issued as Flood Risk Continues in England

The Met Office has activated a yellow weather warning for snow across eastern England, urging residents to prepare for potential travel disruption and hazardous conditions. This alert comes as the Environment Agency continues to warn of significant flood risks throughout parts of the country, with numerous warnings and alerts remaining in effect.

Snow and Rainfall Forecast for Sunday

Forecasters indicate that rain which battered the UK on Sunday morning is likely to transition into sleet and snow, particularly in eastern regions. The Met Office predicts accumulations of up to 4 centimetres of snow in some areas, with the heaviest snowfall expected in the Lincolnshire Wolds, Norfolk, and Suffolk. However, this snow is anticipated to revert to rain later in the day.

The yellow snow warning is currently in force for parts of eastern England until 4 pm on Sunday, following the expiration of several other warnings over the weekend. The Met Office has cautioned that "a spell of snow may lead to some disruption to travel," advising the public to exercise caution.

Ongoing Flood Threats and Environmental Alerts

Simultaneously, the Environment Agency has issued a stark reminder for vigilance regarding persistent flood risks. As of Sunday morning, there were 74 flood warnings and 162 flood alerts active across England. In an afternoon update, the agency stated that "ongoing impacts from groundwater are probable for parts of the south of England through the next five days."

Additional flooding is likely from rivers in Somerset and Wiltshire, while river flooding remains possible in parts of the Midlands from Sunday through Tuesday. The Environment Agency has warned that properties could be at risk of flooding, and travel disruption is expected in affected areas.

Detailed Weather Outlook and Meteorological Insights

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick provided further details on the evolving weather patterns. He noted that temperatures on Sunday evening should not fall below freezing overnight, minimising the risk of frost in England. However, heavy showers are forecast to continue through much of the night, with rain clearing in some eastern areas by evening.

Looking ahead, Monday is expected to bring sunny spells interspersed with showers, some of which may be heavy with potential hail and thunder. Snow showers are anticipated in the far north. Tuesday is predicted to be drier with sunny spells, but Wednesday could see an increased risk of rain and possibly some hill snow in southern regions, with mostly dry conditions elsewhere and frosty nights.

The combination of snow warnings and flood alerts underscores the volatile weather conditions currently affecting the UK, with authorities emphasising the need for public awareness and preparedness.
