Spring-Like Spell to Give Way to Typical February Weather
Britons have been enjoying an unseasonably warm break from the recent rain deluge this week, with spring-like conditions bringing sunshine and mild temperatures across much of the country. Following the hottest day of the year so far for both England and Scotland on Tuesday, the warmth is set to peak on Wednesday, particularly in the southeast.
Peak Warmth on Wednesday Before the Change
The Met Office indicates that temperatures could rise to as high as 18 degrees Celsius in some areas of southeast England on Wednesday afternoon. This spike is driven by a shift to mild south-westerly winds from the Atlantic, creating a brief but notable warm front. The last time the UK saw such temperatures was in mid-November in Chertsey, Surrey, highlighting the unusual nature of this February warmth.
However, this spring-like interlude is not uniform across the nation. While eastern and southeastern regions, including parts of England, will experience generally dry and bright conditions on Wednesday, other areas are already facing wetter weather. Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGivern explained, "Towards the west, the rain sets in and the rain that we've had across western Scotland persists, but it pushes into Northern Ireland, Northern and Northwest England, parts of Wales and the southwest through the day on and off rain here."
Return to Average Conditions by Week's End
The mild spell is expected to be short-lived. A spokesperson for the Met Office stated, "We're experiencing a spell of mild weather at the moment as a warm front moves across the UK, bringing milder air with it. Many areas are seeing a relatively mild week with sunny spells, some rain, and temperatures above what we'd typically expect for late February." However, they cautioned that temperatures are due to return closer to the February average by the end of the week.
Rain is forecast to spread across most of the country by Thursday, marking a shift back to more typical unsettled conditions. The rain in the west and northwest will track eastwards, affecting the entire UK, though it is expected to clear by the end of Thursday. The outlook for the weekend remains unsettled, with rain predicted for many on Friday, followed by brighter but showery conditions on Saturday, and further cloud and rain returning from the west on Sunday. Windy conditions, especially in western regions, are also anticipated.
Flood Warnings and Regional Variations
Despite the recent wet weather, there has been some improvement in flood risks. The number of flood warnings in England has decreased to 42, down from 65 the previous Wednesday, offering a slight respite for affected communities. Nonetheless, the impending rain could renew concerns in vulnerable areas.
In summary, while many have basked in unseasonable warmth this week, the UK's weather is set to revert to its February norms. Enjoy the sunny spells while they last, as cooler temperatures and widespread rain are on the horizon, bringing a more characteristic end to the month.
