Met Office Forecasts Severe Weather with Snow, Sleet, and Heavy Rain Across UK
The Met Office has issued a series of yellow weather warnings for snow, sleet, and heavy rain set to impact various regions of the United Kingdom this week. These conditions are anticipated to cause significant flooding and disrupt travel, with warnings in effect from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday.
Widespread Weather Warnings and Expected Impacts
Yellow weather warnings currently cover much of Wales, as well as central and southern England. According to Met Office experts, spells of heavy rain combined with periods of snow could lead to localized flooding and travel disruptions. Forecasts indicate that 10-20mm of rain will fall widely, with areas near the south coast potentially receiving up to 30mm. Notably, Dartmoor in Devon could experience as much as 50mm of rainfall, exacerbating flood risks.
Strong winds are expected to accompany the wet weather, which may intensify the effects in certain locations. Deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates highlighted that snow is likely over the highest parts of southern England, such as Dartmoor, with the main chance of snowfall across higher areas of the Midlands and mid- and southeast Wales.
Health Alerts and Vulnerable Populations
In addition to the Met Office warnings, the UK Health Security Agency has issued cold weather alerts across parts of England, effective from Tuesday evening until Friday. The agency cautioned that the adverse weather conditions are likely to increase demand on healthcare services by vulnerable individuals and pose a greater risk to life for this population. Health chiefs have emphasized the need for preparedness as care services may face heightened pressure.
Senior Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell described Wednesday morning as "a very wet and windy morning" for many, though northern England may experience drier conditions. He noted that by late Thursday, winds should subside, leading to a gradual improvement in weather. Looking ahead, the weekend is expected to bring milder temperatures, potentially reaching the low-to-mid teens with sunshine, though further spells of wind and rain are forecasted.
Specific Warning Details and Regional Impacts
The yellow weather warning for snow encompasses parts of Wales and western England, including Birmingham and Worcester, from 4pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday. Simultaneously, a yellow warning for rain covers southern England from Kent to Cornwall, active between 6am on Wednesday and 8am on Thursday. These warnings follow a pattern of repeated heavy downpours that have already caused flooding in numerous areas across Britain this year, including disruptions from Storm Chandra last month.
Craig Snell added that a sharp frost is likely across parts of Scotland on Wednesday morning, with additional frost and ice expected overnight into Thursday. Despite the immediate challenges, the forecast suggests a temporary respite by the weekend, with temperatures rising and conditions becoming more settled for most regions.
