UK Braces for Frost and Ice as Temperatures Plummet to -5C

The United Kingdom is set for a dramatic shift in weather conditions, with the Met Office forecasting a risk of frost and ice as temperatures could fall as low as -5C in some areas. This marks a stark contrast to the warm and bright conditions experienced last week, when the mercury soared past 20C in parts of the country.

Sudden Cold Snap After Warm Spring Weather

After a spell of mild and sunny weather that saw the warmest day of the year so far, with 20.9C recorded in Wales on Wednesday, unsettled conditions are now spreading across the UK. No weather warnings are currently in place, but the Met Office has highlighted the potential for frost and icy patches, particularly in northern regions.

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates explained that a series of weather fronts will bring periods of rain, strong winds, and much colder air by midweek. "After a spell of mild and brighter weather, the UK will turn increasingly unsettled in the coming days," he said. "Wednesday could be quite a shock to the system."

Detailed Forecast for the Week Ahead

Tuesday will see a wet and windy turn for many, with heavy, persistent rain across parts of northern England and Wales. Blustery showers will move into Scotland and Northern Ireland, accompanied by possible hail and thunder, as well as wintry showers over higher ground.

By Wednesday, temperatures will take a cold turn, with rain, sleet, and hail showers widely expected. Snow is possible over higher ground in the north, and although some sunshine may break through, it will feel cold due to wind chill. Overnight, temperatures could plummet to -5C in rural Scotland, with a widespread frost likely for most areas and ice forming in the north by Thursday morning.

Thursday is expected to be drier with sunny spells for most places, though cloud and rain will push into Northern Ireland and western parts later in the day. Temperatures will return closer to average from Friday onwards, but further weather systems may affect the UK over the weekend, most likely impacting northern areas.

Met Office Outlook Summary

  • This Evening and Tonight: Rain will sink southwards into Northern Ireland and northern England, with strong winds. Frequent showers in Scotland, while southern England stays largely dry with mist and fog patches. Mild conditions persist.
  • Tuesday: A wet and windy day in the north, with heavy rain in northern England. Blustery showers continue for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Generally brighter towards southeast England.
  • Wednesday to Friday: Turning colder with sunny spells and blustery showers on Wednesday, including snow over hills. Drier on Thursday, then cloudy on Friday with outbreaks of rain.

This forecast underscores the unpredictable nature of British weather, as the nation transitions from spring warmth to wintry chills within a matter of days.
