Carrosserie, a classic car restoration company, suggests a simple kitchen staple: lemon juice. The natural citric acid breaks down surface ice faster than water alone, according to experts.
To use, halve a lemon and squeeze the juice over the icy windscreen, then rinse with lukewarm water. The ice will loosen and slide off quickly. This method costs around 30p per lemon, potentially cheaper than expensive de-icing sprays.
Another cost-effective approach is a homemade saltwater spray. Salt lowers the freezing point of ice, melting it more efficiently than water. While de-icing salt is most effective, table salt works too, saving a trip to the shops.
For prevention, a vinegar and water solution can reduce overnight frost. Mix three parts vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle and mist onto windows. The acidity disrupts ice formation, helping to keep windscreens clear.
