In a devastating turn of events on one of the world's most treacherous peaks, a Russian climber is feared dead after being swept away by a powerful avalanche on Mount Manaslu in Nepal.
The missing mountaineer has been named as 58-year-old Vitaly Lazo, an experienced climber who was part of a larger expedition tackling the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. The tragedy unfolded at Camp 3, situated at a perilous altitude of approximately 6,400 metres (21,000 feet).
Eyewitness reports and expedition organisers confirmed that a massive avalanche struck the camp on Wednesday morning. While other team members managed to escape the frozen torrent, Lazo was tragically caught in its path.
Search Efforts Hampered by Extreme Conditions
Despite the valiant efforts of fellow climbers and a team of Sherpa guides, the search for Lazo was abruptly called off. The decision was made due to the extreme and immediate danger of further avalanches in the unstable area, making any recovery mission a potential death trap for rescuers.
"The risk is simply too great," stated a representative from the organising expedition company. "The slope remains highly unstable, and sending more people into that zone would jeopardise additional lives."
