Will Scotland Beat Its Hottest June Record Amid Heatwave?

Scotland could match or beat its hottest June on record as temperatures are forecast to reach over 30°C in parts of the country this week. The Met Office has issued red alerts for southern England and Wales, where temperatures could climb to 38°C, but Scotland's record of 32.2°C, set in 1893, remains within reach.

Heatwave Conditions Across Europe

An extreme heatwave has swept across Europe, forcing France to close over 800 schools and suspend multiple peak train services. The Met Office has issued red weather warnings for parts of England and Wales starting June 24, lasting 36 hours, with potential power and water disruptions.

While England and Wales are likely to see record-breaking June temperatures, Scotland's outlook is more uncertain. The national forecaster predicts higher-than-usual temperatures but notes that reaching the all-time June record is not guaranteed.

Forecast for Scotland

According to Met Office weather maps, Dumfries is expected to hit 31°C on Thursday, June 25, with nearby areas like Cumnock, Sanquhar, and Dalbeattie reaching 30°C. The hottest June temperature on record for Scotland is 32.2°C, set in 1893. Previous close calls include Renfrewshire's 31.9°C in 2018 and Prestwick's 30°C in June 2020.

Meteorologist Sean Batty noted that reaching 30°C in Scotland is relatively rare, with only a handful of such days in the last century. He said: "As for Scotland’s all-time June record, it could be close. More likely, however, is that a number of towns and villages will set new local June records."

Regional Temperature Variations

Temperatures across Scotland will vary significantly. Glasgow is predicted to reach 27°C by 4pm, while Fort William will be around 25°C. The east coast will be cooler, with Forres and Banff at 19°C and Aberdeen at 16°C. The heat is expected to travel up the west coast.

Overnight Heat and Safety Advice

Sean Batty warned of hot and humid overnight conditions, particularly from Thursday into Friday, when temperatures could remain near 20°C in parts of Glasgow, Ayrshire, Moray, and the northern Highlands. Scotland's warmest June night on record was 19.9°C in Springburn, Glasgow, in June 1990.

Scots are urged to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and exercise caution near water, as temperatures remain cold despite the heat.
