The Met Office has issued its verdict on the 25°C forecast this weekend. Despite a cold and gloomy start to the month, things could be looking up with more settled conditions expected as we head into the weekend.
June's Unsettled Start
June has arrived and brought with it some summer showers following May's heatwave. It was the hottest May on record, with some areas exceeding 30 degrees in the UK. It seemed to be a false dawn, as temperatures soon returned to the seasonal average after a week of scorching weather last month. It has been an unsettled start to June, but warmer and drier conditions are developing, according to the Met Office.
Weekend Improvement
The weather is expected to improve as we head into the weekend with a shift towards more settled conditions across the UK. Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, Mark Sidaway, said: “The weekend will see drier and more settled conditions, especially in the south, with temperatures feeling pleasant but not exceptionally warm for June. By Saturday, warmer conditions will develop for some, reaching the mid 20s, and Sunday will see warm conditions continue, reaching 25 to 26°C in the south. The start of next week is expected to remain warm, with Monday bringing another largely dry and warm day for most. Some uncertainty remains around the temperatures continuing further into next week, and the details will become clearer over the coming days.”
Regional Forecast
Temperatures will remain below average overall, although the strength of the June sunshine between showers may provide a short-term boost, making conditions feel pleasant in some areas. In its outlook for the North West this weekend, the Met Office said: "Further showers possible on Saturday. Otherwise becoming increasingly settled on Sunday with drier and warmer conditions developing. Similar on Monday perhaps feeling very warm in the sunshine." Although the north of England may not reach the 25°C forecast, temperatures between 21°C and 23°C could be expected from Sunday into Monday, which would be a glorious change to the current heavy rain.
