Wirral food festival cancelled on final day due to high winds

The organisers of a Wirral festival said they are “absolutely heartbroken” after they were forced to cancel the last day of the event. New Brighton Family Food and Drink Festival returned this week with more than 100 traders. Taking place at The Dips from Thursday, July 23 to Sunday, July 26, the festival features world cuisines, family entertainment, and hours of fun for all ages to enjoy.

Record-breaking attendance before cancellation

The free event attracted more than 30,000 visitors last year with organisers capitalising on the success with an independent market village, an international food village and a pet village with dog shows, pet assault course and pet-friendly stalls.

However, organisers took to social media this morning (Sunday, July 26) to share what they said was an “incredibly difficult decision”.

Statement from organisers

In a statement, the festival organisers, Kate Corcoran and Jess Waring, said: “We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that due to high winds and following urgent health and safety assessments this morning, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel today’s (Sunday’s) New Brighton Family Food & Drink Festival. The safety of our visitors, traders, performers, and staff must always come first. The past three days have been absolutely incredible, with record-breaking visitor numbers and fantastic trade for so many of our amazing independent businesses. Thank you to every single person who came along and supported us. We’ll take some time to reflect, regroup, and come back next year bigger, better, and stronger than ever. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Community reaction

The post has been met with support from people in the local community. One person commented: "Sending you all so much love. You have absolutely smashed it and created something truly wonderful. Safety and integrity always.." Another person said: "Absolutely gutted, but safety first. It was an incredible event and such an honour to be a part of it." A third person said: "Noo! Two very sad little girls here at home. I'm gutted for everyone. Another fantastic year. Thank you." Another person added: "Such a shame. Typical weather has been great all month and the one day we could come. Daughter gutted going to miss K-pop hope all the vendors, stage, and fair are ok."
