Weather models indicate the UK could experience three consecutive days of temperatures at or above 36C next week, with the mercury potentially reaching 37C in southern areas. The Met Office predicts temperatures will surge above 30C again this weekend, and further hot conditions are expected.
Cooler conditions are expected today, with highs of 23C, but the Met Office forecast shows temperatures reaching 31C on Sunday and Monday in southern regions, with northern areas hitting 28C on both days.
Peak Temperatures and Heatwave Conditions
The GFS weather model shows peak temperatures remaining above 30C on Tuesday, potentially rising as high as 37C in southern areas on Wednesday. The mercury could hit 35-36C widely across the south, with areas as far north as Yorkshire reaching 33C.
The far south-east could hit 37C again on Thursday, with 35C in East Anglia, 36C in London, and 34C in the Midlands. Temperatures could then reach 36C in the south-east on Friday, remaining above 30C widely across England. These conditions would constitute another official heatwave.
Regional Variations
Peak temperatures are only expected to rise into the low to mid-20s in Scotland and Northern Ireland throughout the period. However, parts of Wales could reach 29-30C.
Temperature anomaly maps for next week show the UK shaded in deep red and orange, indicating temperatures will rise well above the seasonal average.
Forecast for Next Week
The Met Office says temperatures will be “turning hot in the south” over the weekend. “Dry for most on Monday with temperatures on the very warm to hot side,” it adds. In the latter half of next week, there will be a “greater chance of frontal systems or thundery interludes to affect southern and eastern areas”. However, the Met Office adds: “For the most part, temperatures look to remain above average, especially in the south, and perhaps turning very warm or hot.”
The BBC says “notable warmth could develop again” next week - “especially across England and Wales and particularly the south”. It adds: “It might not be quite as hot as recently, but temperatures will probably rise above average widely from early in the week onwards, with some locations potentially reaching 30C or more again. Temperatures in parts of Scotland may be closer to seasonal at times.”
