The AA has crowned Broughty Ferry Beach in Dundee as Scotland's best and safest beach in its 2026 roundup of top UK beaches. The travel experts gave the beach a perfect Water Quality Score of 100 and noted it is manned by lifeguards, with an average of 172 sunshine hours in July and a sea temperature of 13.9°C.
Broughty Castle and RNLI Station Praised
The AA highlighted Broughty Castle, a 15th-century fortress overlooking the Tay Estuary, as a key attraction. "Broughty Ferry Beach offers more than just a beautiful stretch of sand—its most distinctive feature is the impressive Broughty Castle," the AA stated. The nearby Broughty Ferry RNLI Lifeboat Station, established in 1830 as Scotland's first inshore lifeboat station, was also commended for its maritime heritage and safety role.
Visitor Reviews and Local Appeal
The beach holds a 4.5-star rating on Google from 714 reviews. One visitor described it as having a "lovely laid back vibe" with independent shops, food options, and a "mean latte" at a nearby cafe. The esplanade offers accessible walking to the castle, and the beach is described as instantly putting visitors "into holiday mode."
UK-Wide Beach Rankings
Elsewhere, Exmouth Beach topped South West England, Frinton-on-Sea led East England, and Mabelthorpe Beach was best in the Midlands. Port Eynon Beach won in Wales, and Benone Beach in Northern Ireland. AA Patrol of the Year Lee Morley advised planning ahead for summer road trips to avoid breakdowns in hot weather.
